“Would you rather have dinner or breakfast before I fly out
tomorrow?” she asked, never looking up from her camera.

“Yes”

She blushed and fought back a smile, eyes away from me.

“The light’s almost gone. Are you sure you don’t want to do
something?” She walked towards her daisy chariot.

“Yeah … yeah … I would like do something. I want one more
shot.”

She was already at the car, ready to leave. She turned and faced
me, waiting.

“Perfect! There is great. Okay, here goes … One … Two …
Three … Marry me.”

“I was content to watch her take pictures because I knew I
could tuck away the moment and have it to remember. I could file all my embarrassing
thoughts  – like how our daughters would look like her  – and remember how she smelled like sandalwood
and cinnamon.

“We’re losing the light. Aren’t you going to get this?” She
asked, never looking away from her camera.

“I’ve taken a few … all I want. I’m good”

“You know if you miss this you’ll never get it again”

“Yeah …. Yeah, I know. Thanks.”

“Why my watch? I asked

“Because I know you love it and I wanted you to know it’s wrapped
around me now. I like putting it to my ear at night and listening to it tick
like a little heart. And …  I wanted to see if you’d stop me from taking it. Do
you want it back?”

“No.  I want you to
have it.”

We got to that place in the canyon she loves and in a moment
she had grabbed her camera and was out of the car. I sat and watched her walk
toward the wooden fence, her frayed cuffs fluttering. She hopped onto the rail and immersed in the moment, oblivious to the world and me.  Something told me that one minute … that one
minute of my life as I watched her bathe her face in afternoon gold, would be
the minute her heart would float away; wafting and darting alone, disappearing.
There was no specific thing that told me, just a feeling that some Olympian
goddess had brushed away my longing with an indifferent flip of her hand: You
will love her; she will not love you.”

“We rode in her Volkswagen because it’s her daisy yellow chariot and she’s
perfect in it, tiny hands hugging the wheel, smiling at the sun. She’s amused
I belong to her and I’m helpless against it, my heart thumb-tacked to the wall. She
downshifts, reached over and, for a moment, entwined her fingers in mine, aware she owns me.”

“I had known her a week when I told her I loved her. She
turned toward the window, smiled and said it was her birthday. I was embarrassed
I didn’t know about it and asked what she wanted; anything.  She turned to me, took my hand and without saying
a word, unbuckled my old watch and put it on her wrist.

“Let’s get outta here … go to the canyon.” She said. “The
light’ll be perfect.”
